Bayou Brew 4/15: A No-Hit Kind of Night

Plus: Coached by Will Wade.

Good morning, Tigers.

Jayden Heavener tossed her second career no-hitter, leading No. 22/17 LSU to an 8-0 run-rule win at UL Lafayette last night. Heavener struck out two, walked two and needed just 68 pitches to complete the five-inning gem, the program's 48th no-hitter and its first true road no-hitter since 2007.

What else is mixed into today’s Bayou Brew?

🐯 And so much more!

🔼 Brown Delivers Again. LSU baseball used a three-run blast from Jake Brown to erase a 2-1 deficit and defeat Northwestern State 4-2 last night. Brown's two-out, fifth-inning homer, his 16th of the season, was the decisive blow, while second baseman Brayden Simpson added his first career LSU home run with a third-inning solo shot to tie the game at 1-1. Nine Tigers pitchers combined to limit the Demons to just one earned run on five hits with 16 strikeouts, drawing high praise from coach Jay Johnson. Deven Sheerin locked things down with 1.2 scoreless innings, striking out the side in the ninth to earn his third save. LSU hosts Texas A&M on Friday at 6 p.m. CT in Game 1 of a three-game SEC series on ESPN.

🔼 Recapping the Draft. Flau'jae Johnson was selected No. 8 overall in the first round of the WNBA Draft by the Golden State Valkyries Monday night in New York, before being traded to the Seattle Storm. She finished her four-year career in Baton Rouge as one of just 14 active players nationally with 2,000-plus college points, earning All-SEC First Team honors for the second straight season and the inaugural Kay Yow Servant Leader of the Year Award. Johnson contributed to LSU's record-setting 95 points per game this season and was part of an NCAA Division I record 16 100-point games.

🔼 Postseason Tigers. Four former Tigers are in the NBA playoffs, and three of them were coached by none other than Will Wade!

🔼 On Track. LSU track & field remains among the nation's elite in the latest USTFCCCA outdoor rankings, with the men sitting at No. 2 and the women rising a spot to No. 4. The Tigers have 12 individuals and four relays ranked in the top 10 nationally, led by Ella Onojuvwevwo's No. 1 ranking in the women's 400m, Jaiden Reid's No. 2 in the 100m and Jordan Turner's No. 4 in the men's long jump.

🔼 In the Rankings. LSU softball is climbing the polls after a strong weekend, moving to No. 17 in the ESPN/USA Softball Poll, No. 15 in Softball America and No. 18 in D1Softball following a 3-1 week that included a series win over then-No. 12/11 Arizona. Over four games, the pitching staff was the story: posting a 1.30 ERA, holding opponents to a .188 average and limiting Arizona's high-powered offense to just .200 with a 1.33 ERA and 12 strikeouts. Before Tuesday’s clash, LSU's RPI sat at No. 15 with a No. 7 strength of schedule. The Tigers host Ole Miss in a three-game SEC series April 17-19 at Tiger Park.

🔼 On Par. No. 7 LSU men's golf finished third at The Ford Collegiate, closing two days of play at 14-under. Junior Jay Mendell led the Tigers from wire to wire, tying for 15th after rounds of 66-70-70, topping the field in par-four average at 4.00. Fellow junior Noah McWilliams also tied for 15th, capping the tournament with a three-under 67, while senior Matty Dodd-Berry finished one stroke back after a strong closing 67 of his own. Freshman Dan Hayes contributed a solid showing at T26, opening with a four-under 66.

🔼 In Class. LSU's Cox Communications Academic Center for Student-Athletes has announced its April 2026 Student-Athletes of the Month, honoring six Tigers for their commitment to academics and community. Baseball freshmen Jonah Aase and sophomore Cooper Williams earned recognition for their attitude and reliability, while senior Zac Cowan was praised for his determination to stay on track academically despite a demanding schedule as a transfer. Soccer sophomore Ryann Denecour was honored for her discipline and accountability, gymnastics junior Konnor McClain for her time management and classroom dedication, and men's swimming & diving senior Stepan Goncharov, who recently qualified for the NCAA Championships and has been accepted into the LSU MBA program for Fall 2026, for exemplifying well-rounded excellence.
