Flamingo Park Baseball Field in Miami Beach has been renamed in honor of LSU legend Stanley "Skip" Bertman, 87, who graduated from Miami Beach Senior High School in 1956 and later coached the school's baseball program to the 1970 state championship. Bertman went on to become one of college baseball's all-time greats at LSU, leading the Tigers to multiple national titles, seven SEC championships, and the highest NCAA Tournament win rate in history. He was inducted into the College Baseball Hall of Fame in 2006.

The Tigers enter riding strong individual performances: shortstop Steve Milam has a 19-game on-base streak and is hitting .387 over his last eight games, while sophomore Deven Sheerin leads the staff with a 2.84 ERA and has allowed just one run in his last 6.0 innings. Mississippi State counters with a five-game win streak and one of the SEC's top pitching staffs, led by sophomore Tomas Valincius (7-1, 1.81 ERA) in Friday's opener.
