Bayou Brew 5/1: Ticket Punched

Plus: An LSU women's hoops reunion.

Good morning, Tigers. It’s tourney time for LSU women’s golf! The Tigers punched their ticket to the NCAA Regional for the seventh straight year, drawing the sixth seed in the Waco Regional from May 11-13.

The Tigers will compete against a 12-team field headlined by No. 4 Texas A&M, Oregon, and SEC champion Tennessee, with the top five advancing to the NCAA Championship in Carlsbad, California.

What else is mixed into today’s Bayou Brew?

🏖️ Sandy Honors
🏀 Welcome to Baton Rouge
🐯 And so much more!

🔼 Game One Win. Paytn Monticelli threw her first complete-game shutout as a Tiger, striking out a season-high nine in a 3-0 win over Auburn to open the series at Tiger Park. The senior scattered four hits and faced the minimum in three of her seven innings, extending her winning streak to five straight. Jalia Lassiter went 2-for-4 with an RBI single and made the play of the game, robbing a potential two-run homer in the sixth. LSU scored all three runs in the second inning, taking advantage of a throwing error and timely hitting from Lassiter and Alix Franklin.

🔼 Sandy Honors. LSU beach volleyball's Kenzey McGatlin and Julia Sprecher earned second-team All-MPSF and second-team AVCA All-American honors after posting a 22-15 record as a pair this season. The duo notched wins over five AVCA top-20 opponents, including Tulane, Stanford, Washington, GCU, and Boise State. McGatlin, a true freshman, also landed on the MPSF All-Freshman team after spending her debut season competing primarily on the top two courts alongside the sophomore Sprecher.

🔼 On Deck. LSU baseball hosts South Carolina for a three-game set starting tonight at Alex Box Stadium, with the weekend doubling as the annual Baseball Alumni Reunion, highlighted by celebrations of the 1996 national championship team's 30th anniversary and the 1986 squad that made LSU's first-ever College World Series trip. The Tigers' offense has been rolling behind freshman Omar Serna Jr., who hit .571 with three homers against Mississippi State last weekend, and shortstop Steven Milam, who carries a 23-game reached-base streak and a .994 fielding percentage. South Carolina enters at 7-14 in SEC play but has won two of its last three conference series. First pitch this evening is 6:30 p.m. CT on SEC Network+.

🔼 Welcome to Baton Rouge. LSU women's basketball signed junior guard Chloe Larry, reuniting the Bossier City native with former Parkway High School teammate Mikaylah Williams. The duo led the Lady Panthers to the 2023 Louisiana Division I state championship together before Williams headed to Baton Rouge, and Larry followed up by guiding Parkway to a second straight title the next year with a 20-point performance in the final. Larry spent two seasons at Tennessee Tech, where she earned OVC All-Newcomer Team honors as a freshman and All-OVC Second Team as a sophomore while increasing her scoring average from 11.7 to 13.6 points per game. The "Silent Assassin" shoots 35.7 percent from three and brings all-around versatility to the Tiger backcourt.
