Bayou Brew 5/18: Relay Royalty

Plus: LSU softball advances!

Good morning, Tigers.

LSU softball rallied from a 2-0 deficit to beat Virginia Tech 7-2 yesterday and claim the Baton Rouge Regional championship for the second time in three years. Maci Bergeron delivered the decisive blow with a two-run go-ahead single in a four-run third inning, her second game-winning hit in as many games, and finished the regional with a .600 batting average and four RBI.

Jalia Lassiter ignited the rally with a leadoff home run and added three hits on the weekend, while Paytn Monticelli earned her sixth consecutive win, retiring the final 16 batters she faced. LSU improves to 40-17, marking the program's fourth straight 40-win season, and advances to face No. 1 overall seed Alabama in Tuscaloosa in a best-of-three Super Regional May 21-24.

🔼 Relay Royalty. LSU track and field closed out the SEC Outdoor Championships with seven medals and a pair of historic relay performances on the final day. The men's 4x400 squad of Amal Glasgow, Shakeem McKay, Grant Buckmiller, and Malachi Austin clocked a program-record 2:58.47, only the second sub-3:00 relay in LSU history, ranking No. 5 all-time in collegiate history and No. 1 in the NCAA this season.

The women's 4x100 team closed in a blistering 42.31, fourth in LSU history and second in the NCAA this season, while the men's 4x100 ran 38.35 to claim silver, ranking seventh in program history. Shawnti Jackson added a personal-best 22.33 in the women's 200-meter final for silver, and Princesse Hyman earned bronze in the women's discus at 58.37 meters. LSU's men finished eighth with 48 points and the women ninth with 38.

🔼 Tee Time. No. 8 LSU men's golf heads to Arizona as the No. 2 seed in the NCAA Marana Regional, looking to punch their ticket to the NCAA Championships in Carlsbad. The Tigers enter riding one of the program's best seasons in recent memory: top-five finishes in all nine tournaments, three wins, and a 103-12-3 record. Four Tigers are averaging under 70 strokes per round, led by Jay Mendell (69.56), Noah McWilliams (69.60), and Árni Sveinsson (69.83). No. 5 Oklahoma State is the top seed in the 14-team field.

🔼 Staying Hot. Paul Skenes’ dream start to the season continues! Skenes now has a 1.09 ERA in 49.1 innings, allowing just 21 hits and striking out 55 in his last eight starts.
