Bayou Brew 5/4: Clean Sweep

LSU softball takes on the SEC Tournament.

Good morning, Tigers.

No. 10 LSU women's tennis punched its ticket to the NCAA Super Regional for the second straight year with a 4-1 win over Rice. Freshman Carolina Kuhl delivered the clincher at No. 5 singles, rallying from a first-set loss to win 3-6, 6-2, 6-4 and extend her winning streak to eight matches. No. 9 Cadence Brace cruised at the top spot with a 6-3, 6-1 victory, and No. 77 Ella McDonald gutted out a three-set win after dropping a first-set tiebreak.

LSU advances to the Super Regional for the fourth time in program history and will travel to face No. 7 Virginia in Charlottesville on Saturday.

🐯 And so much more!

🔼 Clean Sweep. No. 20 LSU capped the regular season with a dominant doubleheader sweep of Auburn, winning 25-0 and 7-2 to complete the program's second SEC sweep of the year. The 25 runs and 24 hits in game one set program records against an SEC opponent, with Alix Franklin delivering her first career grand slam and Jada Phillips launching her first career homer. Jayden Heavener threw her fourth complete-game shutout of the season in the opener, while Cece Cellura matched a career-high seven strikeouts in the nightcap. Sierra Daniel and Jalia Lassiter combined for 12 hits and eight runs scored across the twin bill, and Franklin finished the day with seven RBI and two homers. The Tigers enter the SEC Tournament as the No. 8 seed and face No. 9 Georgia on Wednesday, May 6, at 7 p.m. CT in Lexington.

🔼 Blanked ‘Em. LSU baseball closed out the South Carolina series with a 7-0 shutout at Alex Box Stadium behind a dominant outing from Zac Cowan, who went six innings of two-hit ball with seven strikeouts and no walks. The Tigers took two of three from the Gamecocks to improve to 9-15 in the SEC with three regular-season weekends remaining. LSU hosts Tulane tomorrow at 6:30 p.m. CT.

🔼 Three-Time Honoree. Former LSU forward Naz Reid was named the top professional player from a state school for the third time in four years at the Louisiana Association of Basketball Coaches banquet Saturday in Baton Rouge. Reid averaged 13.6 points and 6.2 rebounds in 77 games for the Minnesota Timberwolves this season, helping knock off Denver in six games in the first round of the Western Conference playoffs. The New Jersey native went undrafted in 2019 after helping LSU win the SEC championship and reach the Sweet 16, but parlayed an NBA Summer League stint into a career that now spans 483 games with Minnesota.

🔼 Jackson Blazes. LSU track and field closed the regular season at the LSU Invitational with Shawnti Jackson stealing the show in her first collegiate 100-meter race, clocking 10.93 seconds to rank No. 3 nationally. The time is the fastest of her college career and puts her in the NCAA top five in three events along with her collegiate record in the 300 meters. Sophomore Edna Chepkemoi set an LSU record in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a 10:14.35 in her first attempt at the event this season, and the men's high jump duo of Justine Jimoh and Kameron Franklin both cleared 2.17 meters to tie for No. 8 in program history.

🔼 What A Season. No. 7 LSU men's tennis saw its season end in a heartbreaking 4-3 loss to Pepperdine in the NCAA Regional final at the LSU Tennis Complex. The Tigers grabbed the doubles point and went up 2-0 after freshman Erik Arutiunian cruised in straight sets, but the Waves clawed back to even it. Olaf Pieczkowski delivered a gutsy performance at No. 1 singles, dropping the first set before storming back to win 3-6, 6-4, 6-0, putting LSU ahead 3-2. But Pepperdine answered on courts four and six, sending the match to a winner-take-all third set at No. 3, where Andrej Loncarevic fought off two match points in the second set before falling 6-2, 5-7, 6-2. LSU finishes 26-7 in a season that included a No. 7 national seed and the program's first time hosting a regional since 2009.
