Bayou Brew 6/18: Teeing Off At Shinnecock

Plus: Tigers give back.

Good morning, Tigers. It’s U.S. Open time! Current LSU sophomore Arni Sveinsson and former Tiger Sam Burns will both compete at the 2026 U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills this week. Sveinsson, the world's No. 14 amateur, makes his major championship debut after shooting 67-68 in qualifying.

Burns tees it up in his eighth U.S. Open with back-to-back top-10 finishes at the event, placing ninth at Pinehurst and seventh at Oakmont. Coverage airs on NBC, USA, and Peacock.

What else is mixed into today’s Bayou Brew?

⛳ Giving Back
👟 Welcome to Baton Rouge
🐯 And so much more!

🔼 Louisiana’s Best. LSU men’s golf placed five players on the LSWA All-Louisiana teams: Jay Mendell, Matty Dodd-Berry, and freshman Dan Hayes on the First Team, with Noah McWilliams and Arni Sveinsson on the Second Team. Hayes was named Men's Freshman of the Year, and Jake Amos earned Coach of the Year. Three Tigers made the First Team, tying for the most of any program in the state.

Four LSU women's golfers and head coach Garrett Runion earned LSWA All-Louisiana honors. Runion earned Coach of the Year after guiding the Tigers to the NCAA Championship for the sixth straight season, the longest active streak in the country. Transfer Francesca Fiorellini was named Player and Newcomer of the Year after leading the team with a 72.09 stroke average and setting a school record with a 9-under 63 at the Golfweek Red Sky Classic. Freshman Ryleigh Knaub earned Freshman of the Year at 72.22 per round, while seniors Taylor Riley and Elsa Svensson each averaged under 73 in their final seasons.

🔼 Giving Back. LSU graduate Taylor Riley was named to the SEC Women's Golf Community Service Team after her extensive work with Athletes For Hope, where she coordinates volunteer opportunities and service initiatives for student-athletes across the Baton Rouge community. Riley also serves on LSU's Student Athlete Advisory Committee community service team. On the course, she capped her career with a T30 finish at the NCAA Championships after surviving a dramatic five-hole playoff to advance to the final round.

LSU junior golfer Jay Mendell was named to the 2026 SEC Community Service Team after logging a team-high 15.5 hours of service, including work with the Thankful Tiger Food Drive and OLOL Children's Hospital. On the course, Mendell set an LSU record with a 69.82 stroke average, becoming the first Tiger to finish a season under 70.

After cheering for the Tigers, reward your own team with beach time. Just a short drive from Louisiana, you’ll find 32 miles of sugar-white sand, warm Gulf water, and the kind of laid-back atmosphere that turns a simple getaway into a family tradition.

Enjoy nonstop family fun, plenty of splash time, and seafood dinners that feel like a victory lap. When the sun goes down, fresh Gulf seafood and colorful sunsets make the perfect end to the day.

Keep in mind Alabama’s Beaches Rule #105: “Summer slows down when family comes
together.” The Gulf is closer than you think, and the memories made will be worth the drive to Alabama’s Beaches.

🔼 Welcome to Baton Rouge. LSU men's track and field signed sprinter/hurdler Jordan Cortner after a seventh-place finish at the NCAA Division II Outdoor Championships in the 400-meter hurdles. Cortner holds personal bests of 50.24 in the 400 hurdles and 46.57 in the 400 meters, and earned All-America honors at both Tiffin and Pima Community College.

LSU women's track and field signed distance runner Stella Junius from Mt. Carmel Academy in New Orleans. Junius won the outdoor 3200-meter state title as a senior and finished second at the LHSAA Cross Country State Championship. She also competed in soccer during her prep career.
