Bayou Brew 8/4: One Ticket to Tokyo, Please

Aleia Hobbs punched her ticket to Tokyo at the 2025 USATF Outdoor Championships.

Let’s get this week going, LSU Fam. Aleia Hobbs punched her ticket to Tokyo at the 2025 USATF Outdoor Championships.

Aleia Hobbs entered the day having clocked 10.94 seconds in the first round of the women’s 100-meter on Thursday. The star sprinter clocked 11.10 in the semifinals to just make the final, and then broke out to earn bronze with a time of 10.92 in the final. The bronze-worthy finish for Hobbs means she will join reigning world champion Sha’Carri Richardson in Tokyo for the World Athletics Championships.

🔼 The Gold Standard. Outside hitter Jurnee Robinson earned a gold medal with the Women’s U. S. U23 National Team after an undefeated run at the 2025 NORCECA Women’s U23 Pan American Cup in León, Mexico.

In four matches played, Robinson totaled 42 points behind 33 kills, seven blocks and two aces, averaging 3.00 points per set. Team USA went 5-0 in the Pan American Cup, logging sweeps in four of the five total matches played.

🔼 Guy’s Got Hops. And that’s a wrap on the USATF Outdoor Championships!

🔼 Okay, Boomers. LSU associate head men’s basketball coach David Patrick, who served as assistant coach for his native Australia for two Olympic Games, will again be on the bench of the Australian Boomers at the Asia Cup, which begins on Aug. 5 in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

Patrick, who is in his second year with the Tigers in his second stint with the program, has served as an assistant coach for the Australian National Team since 2019. The Boomers won a bronze medal at the 2021 Olympics and advanced to the quarterfinals in the 2024 Olympics in Paris.

🔼 A Full-Circle Moment. Former LSU player and 2023 National Champion Emily Ward has been named Director of Women’s Basketball Operations, head coach Kim Mulkey announced Friday. Ward replaces Jordin Westbrook, who is moving on to a new venture away from basketball.

Westbrook’s efforts helped drive fans to games in the PMAC. In four seasons, 11 game attendances cracked the top-15 all-time for LSU WBB.

Ward returns to her alma mater to join Mulkey’s staff after playing at LSU for four seasons (2019-23). Ward closed her playing career as a fan favorite and team captain during the Tigers’ national championship season.

Kickin’ It Old School. Wearing jersey No. 2️⃣6️⃣ as a defensive back and kicker for LSU, Wendell Harris played a key role in the Tigers’ 1961 SEC championship and Orange Bowl victory over Colorado. He earned First‑Team All‑SEC honors in 1961 and later went on to play in the NFL for the Baltimore Colts and New York Giants.
