Bayou Brew 5/3: Got her wings

Today, we're celebrating yet another accolade for Coach Kim Mulkey.

Good morning. We’re taking our coffee this morning with some sugar, a little cream, and a side of the best swing in college baseball. Gavin Dugas, this brew is for you.

What's steeping in today's Brew?

🏈 Double Feature: Spring Football
🐯 And much, much more!

Bet you can’t watch just one. Yes, we are itching for some LSU football. No, we will not apologize for it. Kick back and relax this morning with a double feature over at LSU Gold going behind the scenes and giving you unprecedented access into how this program is gearing up for the fall.

🔼 Hanging Ten. Second baseman Gavin Dugas collected three hits, (including a two-run homer!) last night to lead top-ranked LSU to a 10-0 win over Southeastern Louisiana at Alumni Field. The game ended after seven innings due to the NCAA 10-run rule. LSU improved to 36-8 on the year with the victory, and the shutout was the eighth of the season for the Tigers, which leads the nation.

As LSU’s lead-off hitter, Gavin Dugas was 3-for-4 at the plate with a two-run homer, a hit-by-pitch, and three runs scored. Third baseman Tommy White also delivered a two-run homer in the seventh to give the Tigers the 10-0 advantage.

Right-hander Gavin Guidry, making his first career start, was credited with the win as he worked the first 2.1 innings and limited the Lions to no runs and no hits with one walk and four strikeouts.

The Tigers return to action on Friday evening at 6:00pm CT when they open a three-game SEC series at Auburn. The game will be broadcast on affiliates of the LSU Sports Radio Network, and it will be streamed on SEC Network+.

🔼 Got Her Wings. LSU women’s basketball head coach Kim Mulkey received the Winged Foot Award last night at the New York Athletic Club in recognition of winning the 2023 NCAA Championship. This was the fourth time Coach Mulkey won the Winged Foot Award which has been presented each year since 1996 to the winning coaches of the men’s and women’s NCAA Division I Basketball Championships.

🔼 Holding Steady. LSU remains ranked in the Week 12 national ranking polls. The Tigers rank No. 15 in both the NFCA Division I Top 25 Poll and D1Softball Poll, and No. 16 in both the USA Softball Poll and Extra Inning Softball Poll. LSU is coming off a 2-1 series loss at No. 14 Alabama and will conclude the regular season with a three-game series against No. 10/11 Georgia May 5-7. The SEC Tournament will be May 9-13 in Fayetteville, Arkansas.

🔼 Running On Plenty. We’re gonna need a bigger trophy case. LSU track & field’s Godson Oghenebrume was named SEC Runner of the Week for his performance this past weekend at the LSU Invitational. This is his second SEC weekly honor of the season, earning one last week along with his USTFCCCA National Athlete of the Week honor.

The Ughelli, Nigeria, native beat out a loaded 100-meter field that included the likes of the top three 100m runners in the SEC (himself, teammate Da’Marcus Fleming, and Tarsis Orogot of Alabama), a young star in Erriyon Knighton, and many more of the best SEC runners. He clocked a time of 10.01w which was the fastest SEC time this week, and second fastest time in the nation this week.

In the men’s 4×100-meter relay, the sophomore anchored a time of 38.26 which ranks No. 1 in the nation, No. 4 in the world, No. 2 in LSU history, No. 5 in collegiate history, and is a Bernie Moore stadium record. The team of Brandon Hicklin, Dorian Camel, Da’Marcus Fleming, and Godson Oghenebrume shaved .10 off their time of 38.36 last weekend, which was No. 6 in collegiate history.

Bayou Traditions raises funds to provide Name, Image & Likeness (NIL) opportunities to LSU student-athletes—making NIL deals more accessible and sustainable and allowing student-athletes to gain finance and business experience without compromising their focus on studies and sports.

NIL is a competitive space and now influences where an athlete attends college. We need the Tiger community to join us and keep LSU at the forefront of NIL!

All your base are belong to him. In case you’ve been living under a rock this past season (and part of last year) Dylan Crews gets bases like they’re going out of style. He extended his reached base streak to a nearly unbelievable number this past weekend…
