Bayou Brew 6/30: Keep 'Em Comin'

Today, the awards keep on coming for LSU.

Good morning. The football team had a little fun doing their best Paul Skenes imitations in practice this week. It wasn’t quite 100mph fastballs, but it was a pitching competition! Check out the results here.

What all can you find in today's Brew?

🔼 Man Of The Year. To no one’s surprise, Collegiate Baseball’s 2023 National Coach of the Year is Jay Johnson! The Tigers stacked 11 wins in the NCAA Tournament, finishing with a 54-17 overall record and a National Championship. This is the 7th National Coach of the Year honor for LSU baseball. An SEC coach has received the honor for five years in-a-row.

🔼 The Intimidator. The Intimidator got a makeover thanks to the new championship. The six stars around home plate represent the six previous national championship teams. The purple star above the words “National Champions” represents this 2023 team. There will be another redesign before the 2024 season to include all seven titles.

🎥 ICYMI. The National Championship Celebration in Alex Box Stadium was one to remember. If you missed it, or just want to rewatch it, you can view here.

🔼 She Does It All. LSU softball picked up a new two-way player from Washington in Kelley Lynch. She decided to stay in purple after four years with the Huskies, where she went 25-14 in the circle behind 308 strikeouts and held batters to a .199 average. She also racked up 117 hits, 20 home runs, and 96 RBIs. She was a 2021 PAC12 All-Freshman Team member and a 2023 All-Region honoree.

🔼 Good Directions. The wins keep coming for LSU. Thanks to two national titles and multiple top-10 finishes, LSU landed at No. 9 in the Learfield Directors’ Cup. The last time the Tigers finished this high was in 2009 when they also came in ninth. The Directors’ Cup looks at the overall success of a schools athletic programs and awards points based on finishes in NCAA Championships. The Tigers had top-10 finishes in gymnastics, beach volleyball, and men’s and women’s outdoor track and field.

The last time LSU claimed two national titles in the same athletic year was in 2003-2004 when men’s and women’s indoor track and field both won titles.

Do you know how many times LSU has won at least two national championships in the same year?
