Bayou Brew 2/14: Magic Happened
Today, SEC honors for three Tigers and more!
Good morning! While most of the country was having a normal Tuesday, LSU was celebrating Mardi Gras! The baseball team tried some delicious king cake, watch their reactions and ratings! Plus, one lucky Tiger found the baby.
What did we pour into today's Brew?
🏀 Player of the Week
🤸♂️ Gymnast of the Week
🐯 And much, much more!
In The Dirt. In the newest episode of In The Dirt, Alex Milazzo and Hayden Travinski are joined by former Tiger and now Toronto Blue Jay, Kevin Gausman ('11-'12). He’s is a right-handed pitcher and Cy Young Finalist with over a 10 year career in Major League Baseball. This isn't new for Alex Milazzo, though, who caught for Kevin in Baton Rouge while the MLB and college baseball seasons were shut down over COVID.
📈 STOCK UP
🔼 Leads The League. The SEC named Angel Reese the Player of the Week for the tenth time in her career at LSU! She leads all active players in the conference in Player of the Week awards. Her two dominant performances against Vanderbilt and Alabama stood out to the conference and the entire country. She had 15+ rebounds in both games and combined for 42 points and 35 boards. Against Alabama, she scored 27 points, grabbed 19 rebounds, and dished six assists. Angel is the first women’s basketball player over the last 25+ seasons to record a 20-15-5 game multiple times.
🔼 Back-To-Back. For the second-straight week and fourth time this season, the SEC named Haleigh Bryant the Gymnast of the Week! She’s the top gymnast in the country for the fourth-straight week, ranking No. 1 in the all-around. Over the weekend, she became the first gymnast in LSU history and 14th in the NCAA to complete a gym slam — a perfect score on every event.
🔼 She’s A Track Star. We’re not quite done with the SEC weekly awards. Michaela Rose was named the SEC Women’s Runner of the Week for the second time this year! She had an LSU-record setting performance in her 800-meter debut at the Valentine Invitational. She ran a 1:59.49 time for the fastest season-opening time in collegiate history.
🔼 Top-Two. Two Tigers finished one and two individually at the Hal Williams Collegiate men’s golf tournament! Freshman Jay Mendell won his first collegiate individual title, shooting 10-under 203. Connor Gaunt finished right behind him in second, shooting 9-under. LSU as a team finished the tournament in second-place.
🔼 Made The Magic Happen. Last night, Shaq became the first player in Orlando Magic history to have his jersey retired! He started his NBA career in Orlando when he was selected first overall in the 1992 NBA Draft. He went on to become one of the best centers in the league, a four-time NBA Champion, three-time NBA Finals MVP, Rookie of the Year, and much more. Check out our tribute to Shaq on LSU GOLD!
