Bayou Brew 2/19: Purr-fect Weekend

Today, we're recapping a wonderful weekend at LSU.

Good morning! Wow! What a weekend for LSU Athletics! The Tigers took down No. 6 Oklahoma State, No. 11 South Carolina, No. 12 Auburn, No. 22 Northwestern, had a perfect weekend at The Box, and set a program record. Let’s get into it!

What did we pour into today's Brew?

⚾️ Opening Weekend success
🥎 Big-time wins
🐯 And much, much more!

Boot Up. Meet Jalen Cook: LSU Basketball's point guard who brings a dynamic scoring ability, a Louisiana toughness, and a smooth floater every time he steps on the floor.

📈 STOCK UP

🔼 Hitting Clinic. The LSU baseball team went a perfect 3-0 on Opening Weekend with a win over Central Arkansas and two wins over VMI. Sunday’s game against VMI tied the school record of 27 hits. The Tigers won 27-5 after seven innings of play. Brady Neal went 3-for-3 at the plate with a grand slam, two doubles, and six RBIs. Jared Jones hit two homers over the weekend to lead the team so far this season. Nate Ackenhausen, Luke Holman, and Javen Coleman each earned wins on the mound. The Tigers will play Central Arkansas again today at 2 pm.

🔼 Dealing Dominance. The LSU softball team isn’t bluffing, they’ve proven themselves on the diamond this weekend! The Florida rain cancelled a Saturday and Sunday matchup, but the Tigers took care of business before the storms.

On Friday, they took down No. 22 Northwestern in a shootout. It was a back-and-forth battle, but an Ali Newland grand slam and a Raeleen Gutierrez sac fly pushed the Tigers over the Wildcats in walk-off fashion.

Saturday morning brought more walk-off madness, this time over No. 6 Oklahoma State. Hannah Carson’s single scored Maia Townsend and Ali Newland to put the Tigers over the Cowgirls. Sydney Berzon was locked in in the circle for both wins. This marked Coach Torina’s 500th win at LSU!

🔼  Sell Out Sensations. The third-ranked gymnastics team got another ranked win, defeating No. 12 Auburn by a score of 198.300 - 197.100. Tiger fans sold out the PMAC. Coach Jay Clark said, “to be able to support your baseball team as defending national champions and then come across the street and seat 12,740 is awesome. I don’t know any other place in the country that would do that.” The Tigers scored 198 for the third time this season, making them the team with the second-most scores on that scale this season.

🔼 Record Setters. There’s a new women’s distance-medley relay record, thanks to Callie Hardy, Garriel White, Lorena Rangel-Batres, and Michaela Rose! They ran a 10:55.27 time to improve on last year’s record by about a second. On the men’s side, Dillon Bedell-Bass and Salim Epps finished first and second in the 400m at Notre Dame’s Alex Wilson Invitational.

🔼  Call It A Comeback. The men’s basketball team took down No. 11 South Carolina on the road! They beat the Gamecocks 64-63 in their first true road win over a top-25 team since 2019. The Tigers were down by 16 points at one point, making the win the first time they’ve had a 15+ point comeback win on the road since 2014. Tyrell Ward led the team with a career-high 16 points. Jordan Wright was huge down the stretch, scoring the Tigers’ last seven points. They’ll be back in action on Wednesday when they host Kentucky.

🤔 TIGER TRIVIA
