🔼 Title Town. The No. 1 ranked women’s track & field team won the SEC Outdoor Championship! They totaled 126 points to win the title, with Brianna Lyston scoring 16.5 points. She won the 100m and scored points by placing fourth in the 200m. She also helped the 4×100m relay team to a bronze finish. Thelma Davies took third in the 200m. Michaela Rose brought home a gold medal in the 800m. Lorena Rangel Batres took silver in the 1500m and fifth in the 800m to tally 12 points. The Tigers scored 19 points in the 100mH with Shani’a Bellamy leading a 2-3-4 finish for LSU.
Godson Oghenebrume won his second 100m SEC title in-a-row for the men’s team who finished in fifth. He helped the 4×100m relay team to an event title and a new nation-leading time. Claudio Romero also became an SEC Champion, winning the discus throw.
🔼 Haleigh’s Honda. The 2024 Honda Sport Award for gymnastics is Haleigh Bryant! She won by a vote of administrators from over 1,000 NCAA member schools. The award is presented by the CWSA and goes to the top women athletes in 12 sports. Haleigh automatically becomes a finalist for the Collegiate Woman Athlete of the Year and the 2024 Honda Cup in June. She’s the gift that keeps on giving as we’ll have her in Baton Rouge for another season!
🔼 Double Trouble. Two Tigers earned SEC honors in men’s golf! Jay Mendell was named to the All-Freshman Team after starting in all 11 events and recording five top 10 finishes. He won individual titles at two events in his rookie season. Connor Gaunt was named to the Community Service Team as a leader for the Tigers and in the community. The Tigers will begin play at their own NCAA Regional at the University Club this morning.
🔼 Tide Took Two. LSU baseball fell by just one run in Friday and Sunday’s games at Alabama. They opened the series with an 8-7 loss after Alabama scored five runs in the final two innings. The Tigers responded with a 6-3 win to even the series on Saturday. Luke Holman held the Tide to two runs in 5.2 innings in his old home stadium. Sunday’s finale was a 4-3 loss for LSU after Alabama held off a late rally.
🔼 Onto Regionals. LSU softball fell to Missouri in the semifinals of the SEC Tournament over the weekend. Sydney Berzon and Taylor Pleasants landed on the SEC All-Tournament Team for their breakout performances. Sydney went 1-1 with one save in the circle. Despite the amount of pitches thrown, she maintained a 1.07 ERA with 12 strikeouts in 19.2 innings pitches. She started the tournament by setting an SEC and LSU record of 14 innings pitched and 208 pitches. Taylor finished the tournament with a .375 batting average and led the team with three hits and two RBIs. Both of the RBIs ended up being game-deciding runs. The Tigers will host the Baton Rouge Regional this weekend as the overall No. 9 seed.
